A brief summary of Diabetes and Trials

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition where the pancreas fails to produce a hormone called insulin. Insulin is essential for the processing of glucose ( sugar ) in the body and left untreated a person with diabetes can become very ill.

Diabetes as an illness has been recognised for thousands of years yet it is only recently that we have been able to treat it successfully

There are two main types of diabetes:
Type 1 – INSULIN DEPENDENT and Type 2- NON-INSULIN DEPENDENT

Type 2 Non-insulin dependent diabetics have a pancreas that is producing insulin but it is too little and too late to enable a “normal” lifestyle without the need for tablets and or a healthy diet.

Type 1  diabetes is where the pancreas fails to produce any insulin and the only form of action at present is to inject correct amounts of insulin at appropriate times so as to imitate the complex workings of a healthy pancreas.

When a child is diagnosed as having diabetes it will invariably be type 1 and will mean a future of daily injections, blood testing, regular clinic visits, and a healthy diet.

Diagnosis brings emotional turmoil to the child and their family, the first few months being a traumatic time as the medical teams educate those affected.

Being the parent of a a child with diabetes, is an awesome challenge. But you are not alone. We are here to help, listen, support, and do whatever we can to make life with diabetes more understandable and more normal. Contact Us
