BIG thank you to Amy Smith
On 30th April 2011 I took part in the Exmoor Challenge. There are 4 people in a team, these are all children of the same age (In Amy’s case 10/11 – last year of primary school) no adults are allowed to accompany them. They have to follow a circular route of 16 miles starting and finishing in Dulverton, up across the moors, which is not marked - so following instructions, map-reading, and compass skills are essential. There are a series of check-points along the route and each leg has to be done in a pre-determined time - points are deducted if teams arrive too early or too late, and those who get very tired and lag too much are pulled out of the challenge. Only those who successfully complete the event are presented with a medal. In all over 120 teams took part this year, all teams set off on their own about 10 mins apart over the course of the morning. I was a bit worried about doing it because of my diabetes, but Julie, Kirsten & Suzie gave us advice on what temporary basal rates to set on the pump etc. It was very hard and my feet and legs were really sore by the end, but I’m so pleased that I managed to finish the whole 16 mile course. I so pleased because this will now also help me be more confident to try other challenging things that I have the chance to do. I thought I would collect some sponsorship in aid of Snackpack before I did the challenge and so many people wanted to sponsor me that I have managed to raise £425 for Snackpack. This is a picture of me with my medal after I had finished the challenge.
